Fall Patio Trends

Summertime might be the most popular season for backyard parties and barbecues, but for much of the country autumn can actually be the most comfortable time of year to be outside. The temperatures start cooling down and it’s the perfect time to hang out on the patio.

With the season change, you might want to update your deck or patio to make it more entertaining-friendly. Small changes can go a long way to making the space feel more beautiful and functional with the autumn season.

Fire Pit

Is there anything cozier than a fire in the fall?

Now’s the time to brush the dust off your fire pit and start it up. If you don’t already have one, consider getting a freestanding removable fire pit or installing a stone fire pit with a simple DIY kit! Having a fire pit is a great last-minute entertainment option for your friends and family. Fires take very little time to set up in a fire pit and they can last for hours.

Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug goes a long way toward making an outdoor space feel more like an extension of your home. If you don’t have an outdoor rug, fall is a great time to add one. They’re often on sale this time of year, too.

If you already have an outdoor rug from the summer, consider swapping it out for a rug with more autumnal tones. Reds, yellows and oranges will match the color changes in nature around the patio space. Center your furniture around the rug and have something on it, like a coffee table.

Conversation Areas

As people cozy up, they’ll want to sit and chat for a while. Make this easy with clusters of chairs or sofas near each other, each with some kind of table to set drinks down on. These conversation areas will make even a large outdoor space feel more intimate and inviting. Plus, if you have a large group over, people can break into smaller groups.

Outdoor Pillows

Fall is all about getting comfortable. Outdoor pillows are a must! Trade out your bright and colorful pillows for ones with fall colors. Don’t forget to add some throw blankets for your guests for when the sun goes down and it starts getting chilly. Make sure to store pillows and blankets either in a bin or indoors so they don’t get dirty.

S’mores Station

There’s no better way to end a night in the fall than a warm treat around the fire. And who doesn’t like a s’more?

Maisie Knowles of Maisie Knowles Interiors suggests, “For serving s’mores fixings and other finger foods for guests, use either a potting table or outdoor console table to [display] items.”

Stock the table with all the fixings so family and friends don’t hesitate to dig in. Also, make sure to be the one to start things off. People often feel uncomfortable being the first to start eating.

Lighting

In the fall it gets darker earlier in the evening, so outdoor lighting is very important. It sets the mood and provides critical light.

“If you have a roof or pergola structure, outdoor string lights are easy to add,” says Knowles.

In addition to string lights, tabletopor floor lanterns can add a great ambient glow around the patio space.

Decorate For The Season

The icing on the cake for your fall patio is fresh seasonal decor. It might seem odd to add plants outside, but remember that you’re treating your patio like an extension of your home.

“Check with your local nursery for the best fall annuals in your area,” Rhianna Miller, Outdoor Design Expert for Rubber Mulch. “Most likely all will have those warm, deep, rich tones of orange and red.”

In addition to annual flowers, consider adding pumpkins, gourds and hay bales. These seasonal items are an easy way to add an instant fall feel to your entire home.
